Blog Question #2

I love breaking out the clay for the first time in the semester, and now we are well on our way to our first project, the pinch pot.  What have you found challenging about the pinch pot that maybe you didn't expect?

  1. I can make it but I can't make it very smooth. It always comes out bumpy

  3. I have found many things challenging (probably because I wasn't there the first day) one of the things I have found challenging is making a foot or making the outside smooth. Something I didn't expect was the fact that we put our thumb inside the clay ball to start it all off.

  4. I didn't think that we would be sticking our thumb into to the middle and pinching with our whole hand. I also didn't think about getting the air bubbles out so it wouldn't explode by wedging.

  5. I noticed that when I pinch the pot, one side starts to be thinner first than the rest of the sides. Also, the top is slightly slanted to one side after I finish pinching, but I managed to even it all out. When I first started out, wedging was hard for me, but I understand the technique better.

  6. The most challenging part of the pinch pot to me is keeping the edges smooth, I have trouble with that on all of my pinch pots. I am sure I will get better.

  8. I think the most challenging part is keeping the top rim smooth and the part that surprised me was the slipping and scoring!

  9. The problem I have with pinch pots is that my clay is always uneven and the rim is not flat.

  10. I think the most challenging part is trying to make all the sides equal in thickness. Also when I am forming a ball of clay to make a pinch pot, I have trouble judging how far to push my thumb down.

  12. The most challenging part for me is making the top of the pinch pot even. I also have trouble with the thickness on my pinch pot. Another challenging part for me is making my pinch pot not bumpy. Every time i make a pinch pot it comes out bumpy.

  13. To me, the most challenging part of making a pinch pot is making sure you pinch the clay evenly and keep the outside from cracking!

  14. It was really hard for me to make the bottom the right thickness. I kept thinning out the bottom too much and the pot kept opening at the bottom. Also, it was hard for me to keep the clay smooth.

  18. Making sure the inside and outside isn't rough and cracking. It was also difficult to keep it the exactly 1/2 of an inch thick so it won't explode in the kindle. But I was able to make it out of it fine! (I hope...)

  19. I am currently in advanced, but i remember and i still have a little trouble with making the pot to wide. For me its more of a preference, but i dislike if my pinch pot starts to get to wide.
